My Way of Explaining it

By Tanja Turner

I’m usually asked the question, “What is a Plugin?” when I conduct WordPress training sessions for beginners. The name ‘Plugin’ can be a foreign sounding word to anyone who has not yet delved into the world of WordPress.

So what is a plugin anyway?

The best analogy I’ve been able to come up with is this:

When you buy a car, it comes with standard features.
When you download a WordPress Theme, it comes with standard features.

Sometimes you want your car to have certain things to make it look better, run better or be more practical. Things like a tow bar, roof rack, Mag wheels etc.

Sometimes you want your wordPress website to have certain things to make it look better, run better or be more practical. Things like your Facebook Feed, Optin Box, Instagram pics etc.

Just as you install these extras on a car, you install these extras on your website. And this is done through plugins. You install a certain plugin to run these features.
Let me know if that’s as clear as mud to you….
